Upgrade the spikes to iron after the day 14 horde and place down another pair of spikes / barbed wire fences for the day 21 horde.

This setup is enough to last through the first horde or two easy, as long as you're on the roof shooting them with whatever ranged weapons you've happened to find so far.

It should look like this all the way around: I also put a second layer of wood spikes above each of these for extra damage. I do one ring of wood spikes, one ring of barbed wire fences, a ring of spikes, then another ring of barbed wire fences on the ground.

For traps, put four rings around the base.

Put the sturdiest door you can in the doorway hole.

If possible, upgrade the bottom 2-3 blocks all the way around to reinforced Flagstone.

In A18 and beyond, wood is too flimsy for this setup. Flagstone is more expensive and more time-consuming to make early on, but the difference is huge. You may be tempted to build this out of wood, don't. Make sure to leave a 2x1 hole at ground level to put a door and a one block hole in the ceiling. You can build them as high as you want, I usually go 4-5 blocks in total height or so. Build this out of Flagstone (using the dirt you're digging up).

Build a 7x7 platform around it, digging up the ground as you go.

Find a flat spot, dig one block down, and place the land claim block.

I'll move all my crafting stuff over to that one and link the two via underground tunnel. I always use this as my starting base from day 1, then eventually create a living base. It's rock solid, pretty easy to manage, and very modular so you can upgrade it however you need. I've been using the same setup in every world since A17 or so. I tried to follow Jawoodle's 8 month old video about the killing corridor exactly to a t, but apparently I missed a crucial step or two lol. Unless I am just dumber than the cobblestone and concrete I built it out of, was the lack of a roof of concrete or iron bars, my achilles heel when they manage to break that 1/2 block? In my testing world, the front 1/2 blocks were placed about 4 tiles behind the stairs, so they received very little damage and my cheese base, KC was a success.

In my area where I am standing, I did not have iron bars or a roof on top of me protecting me, Perhaps that was the major flaw?īefore I went to my testing world, I tried this exact same setup, but 1) without the roof or iron bars above me and 2) the 1/2 blocks covered the entire path to the 'stairs' So naturally, the zombies beat on one of the 1/2 blocks, and then proceeded to use the broken block as a step to get onto another 1/2 block on top and run to me, and overrun me. BUT, What is stopping them from simply dogpiling on a single 1/2 block which is hiding one of the wedge tips, then using that to walk on the 1/2 blocks to get to me? Haha. This really well when I tried it in this instance. I used the cheese trick with the wedge tips to create holes in the walkway which zed see as a straight shot to me. Then I designed a killing corridor not using stairs so the zed are forced to jump up to the top which slowed them down massively.
